Halloween!

When I began Paleo, giving up the few bars of chocolate I ate a month was not a big deal The kettle corn, a little bigger deal, I avoided for a multitude of reasons. This was the same for my other favorite treats: rice crispy treats and popcorn balls (yummy!).

I was not really missing sugar until the leaves changed. Entire aisles in grocery stores and the like were transformed into 'sugar traps' overnight. No matter whether I avoided the center of the store or not; there it was CANDY! As good as I was being at avoiding purchasing or even thinking about eating any of it, my support staff however was for the other side.

"It's Halloween! We have to have candy for the trick or treators!"

"Oh, you've been so good, one [sugar coated] apple won't hurt."

"Popcorn, popcorn support the local boy scouts, it's great for popcorn balls and making kettle corn."

Okay so the boy scout was not exactly yelling, "it's great for popcorn balls and making kettle corn," but he might as well have been!

Yes, everyday while I have made this change, the world is still peddling its goods. Tricks to avoid a slippery sloop of falling back into old habits are even harder and I have had to make so much more of an effort. Even the best of support staffs can sabotage you with just one candy bar. In these instances I have made an even larger effort to keep 'Paleo Candy' in arms reach! I consider 'Paleo Candy' to be fruit with higher sugar contents.

It is impractical sometimes to carry it in my hand bag but at least when I go home it is there. I have a few bites. The guilt and shame are not there as if I ate a chocolate bar or other candy. I feel a small triumph knowing I resisted the bad stuff for a better option. Will I do this forever? Probably not but until I know without a doubt I could just have one popcorn ball, or a small rice crispy bar; 'Paleo Candy' will have to do!
